其實最重要是明白這些道理的「總意」，是要我髑們「敬畏神，謹守祂的誡命，這是我們當盡的本分」，這就夠了。所羅門如果「敬畏神」，他的「內心」就不會縱慾於女色和吃喝玩樂；也不敢隨便說神的報應混亂了。所羅門如果「謹守神的誡命」，他的「行為」就不會變成狂妄，隨從那些外邦的妃嬪去敬拜別神。原來我們將來要向神交待的，不是著過多少書，或讀過多少書，而是有沒有遵照神的「誡命」棄惡行善。人若敬畏神，就不敢違反神的誠命，反而實踐神的誠命，這就是一切道理的「總意」了。
我們敬畏神，因為我們知道神是造物主，衪這樣創造人，當然對人有所要求和期望；人所行的，若使神失望，神當然要追究和審問。因為神要審問，才能證明神的作為沒有混亂，神的報應也沒有混亂，並且《傳道書》裡頭一切的疑難，都迎刃而解了。
